Chinese Cars Now One in Five Sold in Mexico; Americans Still Can't Buy BYD

One in five cars sold in Mexico is now made in China, according to a Washington Post column published in September 2026. BYD passenger cars are not sold in the United States because of heavy import taxes and strict rules. Representatives Stevens and Slotkin have introduced a bill to ban Chinese internet-connected cars from the U.S., including through neighboring countries.
