Massive Telescope Begins Recording the Entire Night Sky

A new observatory in Chile started taking pictures of the southern sky on June 30, using the world's largest digital camera. Over the next decade, it will photograph each part of the sky 800 times—producing enormous amounts of data to spot sudden cosmic events, track asteroids heading toward Earth, and understand the universe's expansion. Scientists will use this data to train artificial intelligence to spot patterns humans might miss.
