Court documents from January 2024 reveal Meta executives recognized in 2020 that Instagram and Facebook's "people you may know" feature—which suggests new accounts to follow—was letting adults contact minors. The company continued operating it anyway. New Mexico is the first state to sue Meta specifically over child exploitation on its platforms.
