World Court Finds Rebel Leader Guilty Over Torture Prison

On 23 September 2026, the world court in The Hague found former Seleka leader Mahamat Said Abdel Kani, 56, guilty of grave abuse of civilians, including torture. Judges said he ran a Bangui prison where backers of removed President Francois Bozize were whipped, nearly drowned, and kept in filthy cells during the 2013 civil war.
