ICC Convicts Ex-Seleka Leader Mahamat Said of Crimes Against Humanity

On 23 September 2026, the ICC in The Hague convicted former Seleka leader Mahamat Said Abdel Kani, 56, of crimes against humanity including torture. Judges found he ran a Bangui detention centre where supporters of ousted President Francois Bozize were whipped, waterboarded and held in waste-filled cells during the 2013 civil war. Sentencing will follow separately.
