France sends robots to the deepest ocean

France tested two Deep-6000 robotic ocean sensors that dove to 6,000 meters five times between Jan. 11 and Feb. 2. The work by ocean institute Ifremer makes France the third country, after the U.S. and China, to reach the deepest seafloor. The robots use extra-strong shells to handle crushing pressure, diving well past the usual 2,000 to 4,000 meters.
