Burke wants migration number down over two years

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke told Canberra's National Press Club he wants net migration — arrivals minus departures, like ins versus outs — at 225,000 over two years. Official figures had it at 292,000 for the year to March; the May budget tipped 245,000 for 2026-27. Good talking point for Labor. Visa rules and lottery draws (ballots) will decide.
