Minister Says Visa Changes Won't Raise Food Prices

Australia’s home affairs minister Tony Burke, announcing reforms on 17 September, rejected farmers’ warning Labor’s visa changes would raise food prices. National Farmers Federation chief Mike Guerin said staff shortages could disrupt harvest before Christmas. Burke said Pacific island workers in a farm-work scheme could help, plus faster visas for first-year backpackers, young travellers working on farms.
