An official investigator will finally report this year on how Mark Haines died in 1988. The 17-year-old Indigenous teen was found on train tracks near Tamworth, but police never properly investigated. An inquiry started in May 2023. Detectives couldn't agree whether he fell accidentally, died by suicide, or was killed. The investigator's conclusion will be the first official account of his death.
