Scotland sets environmental checks for big computer centres

Scotland will require new large data centres — buildings full of computers that store online information — using over 50MW, enough power for a small town, to complete environmental reviews, the government said 16 September 2026. The stricter planning rule comes before Holyrood, Scotland's parliament, votes on a Greens-backed freeze on giant projects, which ministers did not back.
