Scotland requires environmental assessments for data centres over 50MW

Scotland will require new data centres above 50MW to submit environmental impact assessments, the government announced 16 September 2026. The direction tightens planning rules ahead of a Holyrood vote on a Greens-backed moratorium on hyperscale projects, which ministers stopped short of supporting.
