EU Invites Canada to Become a Closer Partner

Canada was invited to work toward becoming the European Union's first associate member — like a close partner, not a full member. The EU's top official, Ursula von der Leyen, backed Canadian leader Mark Carney's idea and invited him to Strasbourg. They would build on their current trade deal, CETA, with a wider 'Alliance for the Future.'
