Lawmaker tries to remove defense chief over Iran war

On Sept. 15, 2026, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., read charges on the House floor to remove Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over Iran. The charges say Hegseth committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" by waging war illegally and disobeying Congress's order to pull out. The Pentagon defended Hegseth. The administration said the fight was needed to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon.
