Beehive repairs could force Cabinet out for 18 months

The Speaker says the Beehive's executive wing may need to close for up to 18 months for repairs. This would displace the Prime Minister, Cabinet ministers and their staff from their offices — longer than a full parliamentary term. The government elected in 2026 may need to decide whether to go ahead. New Zealand has no backup building for ministerial work, making the logistics difficult.
