Scientists Find Nine New Sea Sponges Near Alaska

NOAA found nine new types of deep-sea sponge off Alaska, in the Gulf of Alaska and near the Aleutian Islands. That brings Alaska's known sponges to 232. The samples were caught in yearly net surveys that scoop the ocean floor, some as far back as 2012. Scientists described them in two studies and recorded their DNA fingerprints for identification.
