NOAA Identifies Nine New Deep-Sea Sponge Species Off Alaska

NOAA announced nine new deep-sea sponge species from the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, bringing Alaska's known total to 232. The specimens were collected during annual bottom-trawl surveys, including samples dating to 2012, and described in two scientific papers. Researchers also mapped DNA barcodes.
