Peters picks his own advisor as Ambassador to Sweden

Foreign Minister Winston Peters has chosen his own advisor, Jon Johansson, as New Zealand's Ambassador to Sweden. Johansson is the only appointee who isn't a career diplomat — the other four named on 7 September 2026 all work for the foreign ministry. In 2016, Peters said political picks for diplomatic posts should be rare and criticised such appointments.
