U.S. Government Now Owns More Than Half of Venezuela's Oil
The Trump administration said on August 28, 2026, that the U.S. government will own 55% of Venezuela's oil reserves — about 65 billion barrels. The U.S. will pay only what it costs to pump the oil, plus a set extra amount. No U.S. government has ever before owned a share of another country's oil reserves.
