Government staff to be sent to help England's local mayors
The government said on 21 August 2026 that experienced civil servants — government staff — will be sent to work in the offices of England's 18 local mayors from autumn. Each mayor will get five to 10 staff for six to nine months and can ask for particular skills. The BBC reported Prime Minister Andy Burnham saying the scheme would help communities "unleash and unlock their own potential."
