New Colombia president faces earthquake crisis right after taking office

A powerful earthquake killed over 70 people in western Colombia on 10 August. President Abelardo de la Espriella had been sworn in just two days earlier. He flew to Bogotá to lead the rescue effort before his team or emergency plans were fully ready. Six airports were damaged, making it harder to send help to Cali, Pereira, and Quibdó.
