2026 election will be the first where voters cannot enrol on election day

For the first time, New Zealanders cannot enrol on election day. Under changes brought in by the Electoral Amendment Bill, anyone not enrolled by midnight on 25 October 2026 will not have their vote counted. About 440,000 eligible voters remain unenrolled, the Electoral Commission says — nearly 200,000 of them under 25.
