Peters: Pacific missed chance to jointly condemn Chinese missile test

Foreign Minister Winston Peters says the Pacific missed an opportunity to issue a joint statement after China test-launched a nuclear-capable ballistic missile into waters near Tuvalu. Speaking at the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Fiji on 7 August 2026, Peters said some countries arrived with predetermined positions. He declined to name them. New Zealand has pushed for a joint position; none has been reached.
