Luxon calls for four-year-term referendum and signals possible MMP vote, blindsiding coalition partners

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told Newstalk ZB there should "definitely" be a referendum on a four-year parliamentary term and said he was open to putting MMP itself to a public vote. The comments blindsided coalition partners and caught National colleagues off guard. The last MMP referendum was in 2011, when 57.8 percent voted to keep it. The election is set for 7 November 2026.
