UK Court Clears Gatwick's £2.2bn Second Runway Expansion
The UK Court of Appeal has dismissed campaigners' final legal challenge to Gatwick Airport's £2.2 billion second runway, removing the last judicial obstacle to roughly 100,000 additional annual flights at Britain's second busiest airport. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander approved the plan in September 2025; Gatwick targets operation by 2030. The government has pledged over £219 million for green aviation fuel to offset added emissions, though whether that scales sufficiently remains unresolved.
