Two Firefighting Helicopters Collide Midair Near Athens During Wildfire Operations

Two firefighting helicopters collided midair on August 2, 2026, in the Psatha area west of Athens while battling wildfires. Television footage showed one aircraft explode and plunge to the ground in flames after an apparent rotor collision. Both helicopters had taken off from Elefsina military airport. Search and rescue teams were mobilised to locate the crews.
