GSK to cut £1.9bn in costs and double late-stage trials as key HIV drug patents near expiry

GSK plans to cut £1.9bn in annual costs by 2029 and put at least 20 medicines into late-stage trials in 2026, double its previous target. The push comes as patents on dolutegravir — GSK's anchor HIV drug, roughly one-fifth of group sales — expire between 2028 and 2030. CEO Luke Miels is targeting £40bn-plus revenue. GSK expects margins to remain "stable to improving" through the patent cliff.
