French Wildfire Generated Its Own Weather System, Fire Service Reports
The Gironde fire service reported that a wildfire near Arcachon Bay produced a rare pyrocumulonimbus cloud — intense heat creating self-generated winds and whirlwinds that made the blaze "erratic and unmanageable." The fire has burned over 8,700 hectares, injured 42 firefighters, and triggered FR-Alert evacuations across southwestern France as of 26 July 2026.
