Sony to End Physical Game Discs in 2028 — Just as a PSN Outage Showed the Risk

Sony plans to stop producing physical game discs for PlayStation in January 2028, replacing them with digital download codes in retail shops. A July 24 PSN outage that blocked gamers worldwide from launching digital titles for hours drew immediate social-media concern about that transition. Sony has not detailed the outage's root cause.
