Flash flood kills Utah fire captain and four family members during monsoon-season hike

Five members of a Utah family — Provo Fire & Rescue Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and sons Reid, Thayne, and Gage — died in a flash flood at Sunglow Campground near Bicknell, Utah. Heavy rains triggered the flood during southern Utah's monsoon season, when localized downpours send sudden surges through narrow canyon drainages. The couple's daughter, who did not join the outing, survived. A multi-agency recovery effort spanned Friday evening through Saturday.
