NYC Mayor Mamdani Consults Law Department on Authority to Arrest Netanyahu During UN Visit
Mayor Zohran Mamdani told The New York Times he is in "active conversation" with NYC's law department about whether he can arrest Israeli PM Netanyahu if he visits for the September 2026 UN General Assembly. Netanyahu faces an ICC arrest warrant. Mamdani said: "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we will do, but we won't be writing our own laws to that end." The US is not a party to the ICC's Rome Statute, leaving unclear what municipal authority could apply. Israel's UN ambassador insists Netanyahu will attend regardless.
