Laos to file charges capped at one year over six tourist methanol poisoning deaths

Laos is expected to conclude its investigation into the November 2024 methanol poisoning of six foreign tourists in Vang Vieng with charges carrying a maximum of one year in jail and a A$1,600 fine. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she was "deeply frustrated and bitterly disappointed," dispatched a special envoy, and will raise the matter at ASEAN meetings in Manila. Victims' families called the penalties unacceptable.
