Meta kills Instagram's Muse Image after days of pushback over consent-free deepfakes

Meta deactivated Muse Image, which allowed Instagram users to generate AI-rendered images of any public account by @-mention. Creative Artists Agency and SAG-AFTRA objected within days of the July 8 launch, arguing no one's likeness should be used by AI without documented consent. Meta updated its announcement to say the feature "missed the mark" but has not said whether it will return or what standards will govern future generative-AI products tied to identifiable users.
