Police lack systems for bill's privacy safeguards

Parliament's justice committee has backed the Policing Amendment Bill and delayed implementation by six months — giving police time to build IT systems needed to enforce the privacy constraints embedded in the legislation. Police have spent years trying to acquire digital evidence management capability and still lack a clear path to full compliance. The three-year statutory review is designed to assess whether the gap between expanded powers and technical readiness has closed.
