Automattic Begins Layoffs Across Communications, WordPress.com and VIP Teams

Automattic has begun layoffs affecting its communications, social, WordPress.com and VIP enterprise teams, TechCrunch reported on October 21, 2026. The cuts follow the board's September 9 decision to place CEO Matt Mullenweg on paid leave, and a failed attempt to oust him that led to complete board turnover. Insiders say Automattic plans to spread the cuts over coming months.
