NASA solid-state prototypes operate at minus 80°C, survive minus 170°C
NASA's SPEARS solid-state prototype cells operated down to minus 80 degrees Celsius in thermal vacuum testing at Langley, with slightly reduced performance below minus 60 degrees. The same cells sustained no damage after exposure from 100 degrees Celsius to minus 170 degrees, a temperature where they survive but cannot function.
