Gaza Hospital Director Held Without Charges Shows Signs of Critical Injury in Israeli Prison

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been held by Israel for over 555 days without criminal charges. Physicians for Human Rights Israel warned on July 5 that he faces immediate danger of death. A lawyer's visit on July 2 found Abu Safia shackled, unable to breathe or speak, with fresh bruises on his head, face, and neck. An Israeli court ordered his continued detention on June 16. He is classified as an "unlawful combatant," a designation permitting prolonged detention without trial.
