Mental Health Act replaced for first time in 34 years

Parliament finalised the Mental Health Bill on 5 July, replacing the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 wholesale. The 1992 legislation has governed compulsory treatment frameworks for over three decades. The bill passed during an extended sitting week under urgency, compressed the implementation timeline considerably given the complexity of the Act being superseded.
