Google Embeds Image Generation Directly in Search

Google has launched Nano Banana 2 Lite, an image generator now available in both the Gemini app and Google Search as of February 2026. By routing the capability through Search rather than a standalone product, Google exposes generative imagery to vastly larger audiences without friction. Search remains Google's highest-traffic surface; embedding this directly there gives Google a distribution advantage competitors like OpenAI and Midjourney cannot easily replicate through their own consumer interfaces.
