National proposes ring-net fishing ban in Hauraki Gulf high protection areas

The National Party says it would ban ring-net fishing in the Hauraki Gulf's high protection areas if re-elected, oceans and fisheries spokesperson Todd McClay says. No timeframe was given. The ban would apply to ring-netting, not all commercial fishing, RNZ reported. Hauraki Gulf / Tikapa Moana rules allow authorised ring-netting for kahawai, grey mullet and trevally from March to August.
