Drivers can now operate heavier electric vehicles without higher licenses

Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced on 26 June that Class 1 and Class 2 licence holders can operate heavier zero-emission vehicles. The change addresses the weight penalty EV drivetrains carry compared to petrol engines. Regulatory friction on fleet electrification falls, potentially increasing the diesel-independent share of freight transport and improving fuel supply resilience.
