ChatGPT's 2.5-Year Reach to One-Third of U.S. Adults Outpaces Smartphone and Broadband Adoption
ChatGPT reached one-third of American adults in approximately 2.5 years since its late 2022 launch, according to Pew Research Center. By contrast, smartphones took roughly six years to achieve equivalent household penetration after the iPhone's 2007 debut, and broadband adoption proceeded even more slowly. The compression reflects both shifting infrastructure and the diffusion speed of AI-native applications. Among adults under 30, adoption reaches 58 percent, with chatbot usage among Americans under 50 now near 63 percent as of mid-2026.
