Van Velden attacks DIA's fire authority oversight, then asks DIA to reform it

Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden told Parliament's Governance and Administration Select Committee on 17 June she was "shocked" by the Department of Internal Affairs' historical failures in monitoring Fire and Emergency New Zealand. The same day, she launched a major reform of FENZ's levy system. The reform requires DIA policy advice—putting the department in the awkward position of fixing problems the minister just publicly blamed it for missing.
