NEMA funds tsunami research at Milford Sound as single exit route poses evacuation challenge

The National Emergency Management Agency is commissioning new research into tsunami hazards at Milford Sound, which attracts around 800,000 visitors yearly. The fiord's geography—a single sealed road in and out, steep walls, and minimal high ground—creates acute evacuation constraints. NEMA's work aims to refine wave behaviour modelling and clarify whether current visitor volumes are compatible with a defensible emergency response.
