More than half of England's 2026 election candidates faced abuse or threats

More than half of candidates in England's 2026 mayoral and local elections experienced inappropriate behaviour, harassment or threats to security, the Electoral Commission reported 14 September 2026. The watchdog called abuse and intimidation "a serious and growing concern" and said threats surged, affecting candidates across parties.
