Ockenden launches review into 1,000-plus Sussex maternity cases as bereaved parents give evidence
Donna Ockenden opened her independent review into over 1,000 maternity and neonatal cases at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust on 5 September in Brighton. Bereaved parents, including Susan Cacciacarro — whose daughter Chiara was stillborn at nearly 37 weeks after staff did not expedite delivery despite fetal weight loss — began giving evidence. A February 2026 BBC/New Statesman probe found at least 55 baby deaths may have been avoidable there.
