Smith's Oct. 19 referendum asks Albertans to choose staying in Canada or a second vote on leaving

Premier Danielle Smith has set an Oct. 19 vote asking Albertans whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving. Smith says she will vote to stay. Separatist leader Jeffrey Rath calls it a betrayal; NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi and federalist petition organizer Thomas Lukaszuk want it cancelled, citing the U.S. trade war.
