GM Energy Bets on Sodium-Ion for Grid Storage, Breaking Chinese Dominance
GM Energy is deploying sodium-ion batteries for vehicle-to-grid and stationary storage, the first major Western automaker energy division to scale a chemistry long dominated by Chinese manufacturers. Sodium's tenfold abundance advantage over lithium and lower supply-chain concentration make it credible for applications where energy density per kilogram is not binding. The move signals supply-chain diversification at a moment when lithium dependency has exposed industry vulnerability.
