Drought cuts nuclear output in Hungary and Slovenia as European rivers drop

Hungary and Slovenia reduced their only nuclear plants to capacity in July 2026 as record drought shrank river flows. Nuclear plants need river water for cooling; when rivers run warm and low, discharge-temperature rules force cutbacks. The Seine, Rhine, and Danube all hit exceptional lows, also disrupting irrigation and freight shipping.
