OOC Rejects Bunq's Bid for a U.S. National Bank Charter
The OCC denied Amsterdam-based neobank Bunq a U.S. national bank charter on August 4, 2026, citing "significant supervisory and compliance concerns" and no U.S. operating experience. The charter would have let Bunq operate across state lines under federal oversight. Despite recent approvals of other fintech applicants, the rejection shows nontraditional banks still face a real supervisory bar.
