Indonesia's 2026 Wildfires Surpass Double the 2023 Total

Wildfires have burned roughly 1,070 square kilometers of Indonesia in 2026 — more than double all of 2023. The BMKG weather agency blames an El Niño-driven dry season, which suppresses rainfall across the archipelago. On August 8, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park closed as a blaze near Mount Bromo nearly tripled to 176 hectares.
